The idyllic seaside town Deal, Kent

Pastel colored cottages, quirky little shops, blue sea as far as the eye can see and old local pubs by the waterfront. The idyllic seaside town Deal is tiny, but a terrific hidden (and photogenic) gem. A quaint and quirky coastal town that has everything you need for a lovely day out.

Located between Ramsgate and Dover on the southeast coast of England, Deal lies where the North Sea meets the English Channel. The coast of France is approximately 25 miles /40 km from Deal, and is said to be visible on clear days.

What to see and do
Visit the famous pier
Deal`s promenade overlooks a pebbly beach that offers scenic views, and in the middle you’ll find Deal Pier, a landmark not to be missed. You might, like me, recognise it from the TV show “Liar”, and other than being famous from TV, it also offers a terrific view. From here you can look back at the historical buildings lining the shore.

Stroll along the seaside
I highly recommend you to pedal or walk along the shore. On the way you will pass Deal Castle, built by order of Henry VIII and which is a rich part of British history, and many cute seafront shops and cafes. Or why not simply enjoy the view of the big blue?

Walk through Deals most picturesque road
Just back from the seafront you’ll find Middle Street, a picturesque road lined with quaint Georgian cottages. I would argue it is one of the prettiest roads in Kent and you will find a whole lot of photogenic pastel coloured cottages with the coloured front doors.

Deal High Street
Just a few minutes’ walk from the sea you’ll find the city centre. It is small, but filled with unique and quirky shops, and several galleries too, where you can admire local artwork. If you are a charity shop lover you might find some treasures here, and if you are a booklover like me, I recommend a stop by the local bookstore.

Where to eat in Deal
Hut55
Hut 55 is a converted beach hut selling coffee and a selection of delicious cakes. The perfect little pit-stop on your stroll along the shore and the perfect location to enjoy a little treat while watching by-passers on the promenade or sit by the water. Vegan friendly as well and I tasted my first (veggie) sausage roll!

The Lane
Located just off the high street, this small restaurant specialises in homemade burger, afternoon tea with a twist and amazing baked goods! They offer vegan options too, so nobody misses out! Don’t forget to order a piece of cake, they are d.e.l.i.c.i.o.u.s! The whole vibe of the place is very relaxed and is also dog friendly (always a plus in the book for me, so I can adore all the dogs visiting).

Hog & Bean
An independent cafe serving delicious, homemade breakfast, brunch and lunch! The coffee is said to be outstanding too, as they are one of a few local coffee roasters.

Visit the famous Kings Head
The city isn’t short on pubs and a local told us that every street used to have its own pub! The town was full of smugglers back then and they all needed a place to take a pint!

I highly recommend to visit the picturesque The King`s Head. Overlooking the sea (a big plus), serving standard pub food and drinks. Actually had my first ever Pimms here, and it comes highly recommended. The whole vibe of this place was so relaxed and I could have been here for hours.

Watch the sunset from the beach
End the day watching the sunset from the beach or maybe even take a dip in the water? I cannot think of a better way to end the day. Note: there is no sand, so swimming shoes is recommended.

How to get there
The journey time between London and Deal is right under 2 hours. You can take a fast train too, that will take you there in about 1h 30m. The train service departs from St Pancras in London and is easily booked trough Trainline.com. I recommend an open return ticket, so you can head back whenever you feel ready.

Lots of love from Henriette Sophia
