Changing of Guard at Buckingham Palace

// Originally written for VisitBritain

Changing of Guard at Buckingham Palace is a formal ceremony, leaving you feeling one step closer to the royals! And they are finally back after a 18-month absence, actually the second longest one since World War II.

The colourful ceremony sees The Queen's Guard handing over responsibility for protecting Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace to the New Guard. The guard that looks after the Palace is called The Queen`s Guard and is made up of soldiers from the Household Division's Foot Guards. They are dressed in traditional red tunics and bearskin hats.

The ceremony takes place between three locations Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace and Wellington Barracks. It is usually every other day, but is subject to change. Before your visit, make sure to check the ceremony schedule online.
